Changing paddocks in winter – free horse ads at www.horseoz.com/forsale post your ads now!

Here is a short little thing to keep in the back of your mind when changing paddocks. When it’s cold and wet wait until it are least only cold. Because the first thing that horses tend to do when you move them to a fresh field is run around like mad. That really turns that nice green grass into mud with deep divots. And those skidding stops as your horse heads towards the fence doesn’t do your heart any good either.

Echuca horse trials at Waranga basin 2011

Drove up to near Shepparton, which is near where I got Occy from, for the Echuca Horse trials Level 2 last weekend. Is about a 3 hour drive from my place so went Friday night as I had a 8.40 am time for dressage. We did quite well with the dressage, comng second. But the cross country, well. Here is the course up to jump 6. Long drive to jump 5 jumps of a cross country course.

Floating horses and feeding – post your free equestrian ads at www.horseoz.com/forsale now

I go to quite a few competitions with my horse plus lots of different training sessions and clinics. Most are fairly close to home, within an hours drive or so. But some are a good deal further. Occy does not eat hay when he is on the float. If a horse doesn’t eat for an hour it’s not a real big deal. But for a longer trip it can start to cause issues with anything from ulcer to colic.
For Occy I found a solution. He normally loves to eat except for hay when being floated. But I discovered he will still eat Lucerne. This has the added benefit of assisting to guard against ulcers with the stomach acid buffering properties it has plus Lucerne is usually not as dusty as pasture hay. It’s a win win. Occy gets to eat and I end up with a healthier horse.

Showjump practice at night

Jumped Occy for the first time at night at home in practice for this
weekend. Had to be careful positioning the jumps so that they didn’t look
confusing with lights and shadows and false ground lines. Think I got it
right as Occy jumped quite well. More importantly he was off my leg and
moved forward when asked to.

Showjumping, dressage, Combined training and horse trials – Free horse ads at www.horseoz.com/forsale

Been busy lately. More than usual that is. So has Occy as he seems to be part of the busy.

We have been doing quite well the last few weeks placing at all comps we have been to including a 1st place at Bulla Horse Trials and a 2nd place at Top Team Trophy combined Training at Werribee just last Saturday.

The dressage is going well with Occy getting more consistent in his outline while maintaining his forward and suppleness.
Showjumping has been consistent apart from a couple of aberrations where Occy just stopped in front of a jump. Checked him as well as I can for any physical issues including saddle fit, so hope he was just having a moment.
Next up is Echuca horse trials, so here is hoping that we can keep the ball rolling and that we have good weather.
